State
Requirements for School Social Workers
They are contained in the School Code and
referenced in the special ed administrative rules. To be an "approved
school social worker", the individual must take academic work that covers
several listed items, usually covered in the 3 classes in the MSW program,
an MSW with a 500 hours field practicum in family, children and
youth. The three classes include a social practice/policy class, one on
special ed disabilities and one on assessment. The first year of school
practice requires supervision by an approved SSW before permanent approval
is granted. The process can only begin through 6 universities approved by
the state: Wayne, Easter, Michigan, Michigan State, Western and Grand
Valley.
MASSW has a brochure on Michigan School Social
Work, we've sent materials to superintendents - you can get a copy from
the president, Jon Wurdock, and
there are excellent brochures from both
NASW and
SSWAA.

FAQ about
Social Workers being licensed under SB 189
Q. What do the 60 hours of
continuing ed really mean?
A. Please note that these
are "hours" and not CEU's. These are actual HOURS and can be
anything from attending conference workshops (almost 12 hours plus worth of
information in one weekend) to the professional development that the school
districts are "required" to provide for their employees.
At this time, there is nothing official regarding
continuing ed hours. It is looking like it will be 45 hours over a three year
period and a certain amount will need to be on ethics. But again, none of this
has been formally worked out and to quote Max Thorne "don't bother keeping track
of hours now, there is too much for us to do.".
Q. When does the bill go into
effect?
A. Although the bill was passed,
it does not go into effect until July 2005.

Eligibility for Public Benefits
ARE YOU ELIGIBLE?
A Web site is now available to determine eligibility for a wide range of public benefits, and the site could be useful to youth workers assisting children and families in their youth agencies.
The site helps low-income families navigate the oft-complicated maze of regulations and applications for public assistance programs such as food stamps, WIC, the school lunch program and Medicaid.
